Delicious Coffee Substitute

Delicious Coffee Substitue

On my trip to Mexico a few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting Joy Houston. She is a raw foodist with a compelling story and a talent for creating out of this world delicious raw food. I have been doing her Rocking Body Raw Food 2 week cleanse and have learned how to make tasty things like raw falafels with a macadamia based tzatziki sauce and a mock egg salad that will knock your socks off!

I came across the Maca FACA (FACA stands for For Absolute Clarity All-day) on Joy’s website The Delicious Revolution just after I returned from Mexico and have been a wee bit obsessed. This is a delicious raw alternative to coffee. There’s caffeine in the green tea powder and cacao so you don’t have to suffer while trying to decrease your dependence. Maca provides many benefits but two that are especially important here: it is a stimulant that provides mental clarity and focus and an adaptogen which helps the body cope with change and stress. The cayenne provides the kick to get everything moving. I have definitely noticed that I am more clear headed and focused after drinking this and I don’t have the mid afternoon crash I get from coffee.

A big coffee drinker, I will often start the day with 3 or 4 cups. But I don’t think it is the coffee I am addicted to as much as it is the ritual of waking up and enjoying a few cups of something warm with a little kick to it. I suspect the addiction to this ritual started when I was very young.

When we were little girls my father woke us up one by one each morning. We rolled out of bed and plodded sleepily down to my parents bedroom where my mother was still in bed. We climbed into bed with her and soon after my father reappeared with a tray and a cup of tea for each of us. And that’s how we began each morning, all five of us in that big bed, drinking tea.

To this day, nothing comforts me more than a cup of tea or coffee (or Maca Faca) in bed.

Make it easy on yourself and save some money by ordering everything from Amazon.

2 cups almond milk (homemade is best)
2 tablespoons Navitas Naturals Cacao Powder
1 teaspoon Navitas Naturals Maca Powder
1/4 teaspoon DoMatcha Green Tea Powder
1 teaspoon Organic Raw Honey
a dash cayenne
Sometimes I like to add a dash of cinnamon – I recommend this Ceylon Cinnamon for reasons I will explain later.

Blend all the ingredients together in a Vitamix or blender. Add more honey if you want it sweeter or more Green Tea if you need more caffeine. Get back into bed and enjoy.

Makes 2 cups.
